The Federal Government has proposed ₦962.83 billion in the 2026 Appropriation Bill for the procurement of Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs) and various empowerment projects, drawing attention amid concerns over Nigeria’s rising debt profile and continued borrowing.
The 2026 budget proposal has come under fresh scrutiny following reports that nearly ₦1 trillion has been earmarked for the purchase of vehicles and the implementation of empowerment programmes across ministries, departments and agencies.
The allocations are contained in the proposed 2026 Appropriation Bill currently before the National Assembly for consideration.
Breakdown of the Allocation
According to reports, the ₦962.83 billion provision covers the procurement of official vehicles, including SUVs, as well as constituency-linked empowerment initiatives and other intervention programmes across government agencies.
The proposed expenditure comes as the Federal Government continues efforts to finance key infrastructure, social investment and security programmes through both domestic and external borrowing.
Concerns Over Spending Priorities
The proposed allocation has generated debate over government spending priorities at a time many Nigerians continue to grapple with high inflation, rising living costs and economic hardship.
Critics argue that the government should prioritise investments in healthcare, education, electricity and productive sectors capable of stimulating economic growth and job creation. Supporters, however, maintain that many of the empowerment projects are intended to provide direct support to citizens and vulnerable communities.
Budget Still Subject to Legislative Approval
The 2026 Appropriation Bill remains before the National Assembly and may be amended before final passage.
Budgetary proposals only become legally binding after approval by both chambers of the National Assembly and presidential assent.
