Presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has promised to restore fuel subsidy if elected President of Nigeria in 2027.
Sowore made the pledge during an interview on ARISE TV while outlining his proposed alternative approach to Nigeria’s economic challenges.
Asked whether he would bring back fuel subsidy, the AAC candidate responded in the affirmative.
Sowore argued that the government continues to subsidise aspects of the economy despite the removal of the petrol subsidy, pointing to interventions affecting the naira and other sectors.
He also criticised the economic consequences of the subsidy removal, linking the policy to increased hardship and pressure on Nigerians.
According to Sowore, his administration would approach the issue differently and focus on policies aimed at reducing poverty and improving the living conditions of Nigerians.
He also criticised what he described as the government’s communication of economic reforms through statistics that, in his view, do not adequately reflect the realities experienced by ordinary citizens.
President Bola Tinubu announced the removal of petrol subsidy during his May 29, 2023 inauguration speech, with the policy taking effect immediately.
Sowore’s promise to reverse the policy now places fuel subsidy firmly back in the political debate ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
