Barcelona have confirmed that midfielder Fermín López will wear the club’s iconic number 7 shirt for the new season following the departure of Ferran Torres.

The decision represents a significant change for López, who previously wore the number 16 shirt.

Barcelona’s internal decision to move López to number 7 also clears the way for new signing Rodri to take the number 16 shirt.

López has become an increasingly important player for Barcelona, and the decision to hand him the number 7 shirt reflects the club’s growing confidence in the Spanish midfielder.

The number has historically been associated with some of Barcelona’s prominent attacking players, giving the change additional significance.

Ferran Torres previously occupied the number 7 shirt before leaving Barcelona for Paris Saint-Germain.

López’s promotion comes after a period in which he established himself as an important member of Barcelona’s first-team squad.

The midfielder previously wore number 16, a shirt that will now reportedly be available for Rodri. Reports indicate that Rodri is set to take the number as Barcelona continues preparations for the new campaign.

Barcelona have also made changes involving goalkeeper Joan García, who has taken the number 1 shirt previously associated with Marc-André ter Stegen. Squad-number changes have been part of the club’s preparations for the 2026/27 season.

The changes provide a fresh identity for several Barcelona players as the club prepares for another competitive campaign.

For López in particular, wearing the number 7 shirt represents a significant step in his development and status within the squad.

The midfielder will now have the opportunity to justify the confidence placed in him as Barcelona targets success across domestic and European competitions.
