Joao Cancelo has revealed the strength of his desire to return to Barcelona, saying he made it clear to the club’s sporting director Deco that he would rather spend a year without playing than join another club.

The Portuguese defender, who has returned to Barcelona, described his decision as straightforward, stressing that his priority was to continue his career at the Catalan club.

Cancelo reportedly told Deco that it was Barcelona or nothing for him, underlining the importance of the club to his career plans.

The defender’s comments underline his strong attachment to Barcelona after previously spending time at the club.

Cancelo joined Barcelona on loan from Manchester City in 2023 before returning to the Catalan side after a subsequent spell away.

His return has been closely followed by Barcelona supporters as the club continues to reshape its squad ahead of the new season.

The Portuguese international has established himself as one of the most experienced full-backs in European football, having played for major clubs in England, Italy, Spain and Germany.

His versatility allows him to operate on either side of the defence, making him a valuable option for Barcelona’s tactical setup.

Cancelo’s comments also highlight the role played by Deco in Barcelona’s efforts to bring him back to the club.

The defender made clear that his preference was not based simply on finding another club, but on his desire to represent Barcelona again.

His return comes as Barcelona prepares for another demanding campaign in domestic and European football.

With the club continuing to make adjustments to its squad, Cancelo is expected to play an important role as Barcelona pursues major honours.
