Minister of Works David Umahi is set to inspect the deteriorating Benin-Asaba Road following growing complaints over severe gridlock and worsening road conditions along the major South-South corridor.
Umahi said he would visit the road on Tuesday to assess the situation and engage relevant stakeholders on possible solutions.
The Minister disclosed the plan after mounting concerns over the deteriorating condition of the highway, which has caused serious difficulties for motorists and other road users.
Recent reports indicate that motorists travelling along the Benin-Agbor section have faced severe congestion, with failed portions of the road making movement increasingly difficult.
The Guardian reported that motorists and residents had been trapped in long delays on the deteriorating route, with deep potholes, failed sections and congestion worsening the situation.
Umahi is expected to meet with the concessionaire responsible for the project, independent engineers and relevant government stakeholders as part of efforts to determine how the situation can be addressed.
The Minister has also indicated that lawmakers from the Senate and House of Representatives committees on works would participate in the inspection.
The Benin-Asaba corridor is a major transportation route linking Edo and Delta states and forms an important connection between communities and commercial centres in the South-South.
The worsening condition has raised concerns over travel time, vehicle damage, transportation costs and the general safety of motorists.
Umahi has said the Federal Government intends to engage the private-sector concessionaire and other stakeholders to address the challenges affecting the road.
The inspection is expected to provide an opportunity for the Works Ministry to assess the extent of deterioration and determine the immediate interventions required.
