Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has pledged to rebuild Oluku Market in Benin City and support traders whose shops and goods were destroyed in a fire triggered by a petrol tanker explosion on Thursday.

The governor gave the assurance on Friday, October 16, 2026, during a visit to the market along the Benin–Lagos Road in Ovia North-East Local Government Area, where he assessed the extent of the destruction and met with affected traders.

Okpebholo expressed sadness over the incident, assuring victims that his administration would not abandon them as they struggle to recover from the disaster.

He pledged to support efforts to rebuild the market and help traders restore their businesses and livelihoods, many of which were severely affected by the fire.

The incident has renewed concerns about the dangers associated with petroleum tanker accidents, particularly when residents gather around fallen tankers to scoop fuel before emergency responders can secure the scene.

During his visit, the governor warned residents against attempting to collect petrol from fallen tankers, describing the practice as dangerous and avoidable.

He said the disaster could have been prevented if people had kept their distance from the fallen tanker and appropriate safety precautions had been observed during efforts to transfer its contents.

Okpebholo also criticised the handling of the fuel transfer operation, stressing the importance of prioritising public safety whenever such incidents occur.

The destruction of Oluku Market represents a significant setback for traders who depend on daily commercial activities to support their families and sustain their businesses.

The governor’s pledge offers a measure of reassurance to those affected, although the implementation of the rebuilding plan and the details of assistance for individual traders will be important in determining how quickly they can resume their livelihoods.

The incident underscores the need for stronger enforcement of petroleum transportation safety measures, effective emergency responses and public awareness campaigns to prevent further loss of lives and property.
