Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has pledged to heal divisions created by the recent governorship election and pursue a more inclusive administration as he begins another phase of his tenure.
Adeleke made the commitment in a state broadcast on Thursday, August 27, as Osun marked the 35th anniversary of its creation.
The governor acknowledged the tensions, injuries and deaths associated with the recent electoral crisis and called on residents to move beyond the divisions generated by the election.
He promised to unite the people of the state and uphold equity and fairness in governance.
Adeleke’s remarks come after a closely watched governorship election that generated political tension and competing claims among the major parties.
The governor had earlier appealed for peace following his victory, calling on residents to reject post-election violence and urging community and traditional leaders to support reconciliation efforts.
In his latest message, Adeleke recognised the difficult circumstances surrounding the election and said the experience had tested Osun’s democratic values.
He also called for a renewed focus on governance and development rather than allowing political disagreements to deepen divisions within communities.
The governor’s commitment to healing the state comes at an important point for Osun, where the aftermath of the election has remained politically sensitive.
His administration now faces the task of translating calls for unity into practical governance, particularly for residents and political opponents who may feel marginalised by the election process.
Adeleke has also indicated that his next phase of government will focus on development while widening the reach of governance.
The governor’s appeal is consistent with his earlier call for forgiveness and restoration of communal relationships following the violence that accompanied the election campaign.
The challenge for the administration will be to sustain the reconciliation message beyond public statements and ensure that political differences do not undermine governance and social cohesion.
