The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress in Rantan Ward, Bebeji Local Government Area of Kano State, Alhaji Garba Buba, has been killed after suspected gunmen attacked the community.
Another resident identified as Sulaiman Zunduma was also killed in the attack, which reportedly occurred on Sunday night.
According to reports from residents and Nigerian media outlets, the attackers invaded Rantan community and opened fire on residents, sending people fleeing from their homes.
Buba was reportedly shot during the attack and rushed to a hospital for medical treatment but later died from injuries sustained in the shooting.
Zunduma, another resident of the community, reportedly died at the scene after being shot.
Local accounts said several other residents were injured during the incident, although details regarding the total number of casualties were still emerging as of Monday.
The attack has renewed concerns over insecurity in parts of Kano State, particularly communities facing threats from suspected kidnappers and armed groups.
The incident was reported shortly after another security incident in the state involving the abduction of the Sarkin Noman of Kano State, Yusuf Nadabo Chiromawa, who was later rescued, according to local reports.
The killing of Buba is also politically significant because it comes ahead of the 2027 general elections, when political parties are expected to intensify grassroots mobilisation across the country.
Rantan Ward is located in Bebeji Local Government Area, one of the areas where security concerns have continued to affect residents.
While reports have attributed the attack to suspected kidnappers or bandits, authorities had not, at the time of initial reports, publicly identified the perpetrators or established a definitive motive for the killings.
The Kano State Police Command was also yet to issue a detailed public account confirming all aspects of the incident at the time of reporting.
Residents have consequently called for increased security presence in the area and urgent measures to prevent further attacks.
The latest killings add to a growing list of violent incidents reported in parts of northern Nigeria, where communities continue to face threats from armed criminals.
