Minister of Defence Christopher Musa has dismissed claims that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu could be defeated in the 2027 presidential election, expressing confidence in the APC’s prospects in northern Nigeria.
Musa’s comments come amid increasingly intense political arguments over whether the opposition can break the ruling party’s hold on key northern states.
The debate has become particularly important in Kaduna, where political alignments have shifted significantly since the 2023 election.
APC Confident About Kaduna
Musa rejected suggestions that the APC should be written off in the 2027 election.
His position echoes comments from Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani, who previously predicted that Tinubu could secure between 70 and 80 per cent of votes in the state.
The governor argued that the political configuration in Kaduna has changed since 2023 and cited government projects and political realignments as factors that could benefit the President.
Opposition Disagrees
Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso have continued to project confidence in their ability to defeat Tinubu.
Kwankwaso recently argued that even having more than 30 governors does not automatically guarantee an incumbent president victory.
He cited the 2015 election, when then-President Goodluck Jonathan lost his re-election bid despite the PDP controlling a substantial number of states.
Kaduna Remains A Key Battleground
Kaduna will be one of the states closely watched in 2027 because of its political importance and voting strength.
The 2023 election demonstrated that the state could swing against the eventual winner nationally, making its political direction particularly significant.
The competing predictions from APC officials and opposition leaders therefore set the stage for an intense contest.
