World football governing body FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) are sending a joint delegation to Abuja as discussions continue over proposed reforms in Nigerian football administration.
The development follows disagreements and uncertainty surrounding the governance and electoral processes within the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
FIFA says no final decision has been made
FIFA said it and CAF were still assessing the legal, governance, administrative and electoral implications of the situation.
The organisations stressed that no conclusions had yet been reached regarding possible next steps.
The clarification came after reports suggested that FIFA and Nigerian authorities had reached an understanding over proposed reforms.
Assessment mission
According to correspondence reported by Vanguard, FIFA and CAF intend to conduct a joint assessment mission in Abuja.
The delegation is expected to meet stakeholders including NFF officials, members of the NFF Congress, electoral bodies and representatives of the Federal Government and National Sports Commission.
The aim is to gather information and assess the situation before deciding whether recommendations should be submitted to the relevant decision-making bodies.
Electoral process
FIFA and CAF have also reportedly asked that further steps in the ongoing NFF electoral process be suspended until their assessment is completed.
The request is intended to preserve the existing situation while the international football bodies review the matter.
No suspension decision
Importantly, the available reports do not establish that Nigeria has been suspended from international football.
FIFA and CAF have said the assessment remains open and that no assumptions should be made about what action may eventually follow.
