Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has distributed N50,000 each to 5,800 women across the state as part of his administration’s monthly women empowerment and poverty alleviation programme.
The intervention amounts to N290 million and is designed to help beneficiaries establish or expand small businesses and improve their household incomes.
The distribution was carried out as part of the state government’s broader effort to support vulnerable women and promote financial independence.
Speaking during the exercise at the Government House in Kano, Governor Yusuf said the programme was intended to provide women with capital that could help them become economically self-reliant.
The beneficiaries are expected to use the funds for small-scale commercial activities and other income-generating ventures.
Reports from Nigerian media confirmed the N50,000 payments to 5,800 women under the programme.
The governor’s administration has described the initiative as part of its poverty-relief and women’s empowerment strategy.
Supporters of the programme say direct financial assistance can help vulnerable households cope with the rising cost of living, while also giving women the opportunity to build sustainable businesses.
The Kano government said the initiative would continue as part of its monthly intervention programme.
The latest distribution comes amid growing pressure on state and federal governments to introduce measures that can cushion the effects of economic hardship on low-income households.
