The Ekiti State Government has distributed cash and relief materials valued at N105 million to 159 residents affected by rainstorms and flooding across the state’s 16 local government areas.
The intervention was announced as part of the state government’s response to the impact of severe weather events that damaged homes and disrupted the livelihoods of affected residents.
Governor Biodun Oyebanji used the occasion to urge residents to take preventive measures against flooding and other consequences of heavy rainfall.
Cash and Relief Materials Distributed
The beneficiaries received financial assistance alongside materials intended to help them rebuild or repair properties damaged by rainstorms and flooding.
The relief package included roofing sheets, bags of cement, roofing nails, planks and food items.
The state government said the intervention was designed to provide immediate support to families whose homes and livelihoods were affected.
For many affected households, the destruction of roofs and other parts of buildings can leave families exposed to further hardship, particularly during the rainy season.
Oyebanji Warns Against Blocked Drainages
Oyebanji also urged residents to pay greater attention to environmental safety.
The governor called on communities to clear drainage channels and avoid activities that block waterways and restrict the movement of stormwater.
He urged residents to take warnings from the Nigeria Meteorological Agency seriously, particularly during periods of intense rainfall.
According to the governor, preventive action by communities can help reduce the severity of flooding and minimise damage to lives and property.
Government Response to Disasters
The latest intervention forms part of the state government’s response to weather-related emergencies affecting communities across Ekiti.
Rainstorms and flooding can cause significant damage to residential buildings, roads, farms and other infrastructure, placing additional pressure on affected families.
The government said the relief effort was intended to provide immediate assistance while encouraging residents to adopt measures that can reduce future risks.
The N105 million intervention covers beneficiaries drawn from all 16 local government areas of the state.
