Nigerian comedian and social commentator Debo Adebayo, popularly known as Mr Macaroni, has explained why he is reluctant to enter Nigerian politics, saying the country’s political environment can damage the reputations of people who were previously respected.
Macaroni made the comments in a viral video while discussing the challenges of speaking publicly about issues affecting Nigerians.
He said people who advocate for citizens can sometimes become targets of criticism from the same members of the public they seek to represent.
“The same Nigerians that you speak for turn against you,” he said.
Macaroni also said his observations of Nigeria’s political environment had made him unwilling to pursue a political career.
‘Politics corrupts the very best of us’
The entertainer said he had watched people he previously admired enter politics and, in his view, damage the reputations they had built before joining the political space.
He described the political environment as one that could “corrupt the very best of us.”
Macaroni also discussed the reaction of Nigerians to economic difficulties, arguing that public anger over issues such as fuel prices often fades after a short period.
He said citizens may protest or complain about difficult conditions before eventually moving on to other issues.
‘Surviving Nigeria is not something to brag about’
The comedian further criticised the tendency to celebrate Nigerians’ ability to endure difficult living conditions.
He argued that surviving hardship should not itself be treated as an achievement and that attention should instead focus on improving the conditions responsible for the hardship.
Macaroni’s remarks come as he continues to use social media and entertainment platforms to comment on governance, the economy and issues affecting ordinary Nigerians.
Despite his political commentary, he said he currently has no intention of seeking political office.
