The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will conduct bye-elections in five constituencies across four states on Saturday, September 19, 2026.
The commission has scheduled the elections to fill vacant legislative seats in Gombe, Kano, Bauchi and Delta states.
The affected constituencies are:
- Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency — Gombe State
- Dawakin Kudu State Constituency — Kano State
- Sakwa State Constituency — Bauchi State
- Disina State Constituency — Bauchi State
- Udu State Constituency — Delta State
The polls will therefore cover one federal constituency and four State House of Assembly constituencies.
Electoral preparations
INEC has been conducting preparations for the elections, including media accreditation and other arrangements required for the conduct of the polls.
The commission previously announced the opening of online accreditation for journalists and media organisations covering the elections.
The bye-elections come as Nigeria’s electoral authorities continue preparations for the wider 2027 general elections.
Unlike general elections, bye-elections are held to fill legislative vacancies that arise during the life of an elected assembly or parliament.
Focus on participation and security
The affected constituencies will be closely watched for voter turnout, logistics, accreditation and security arrangements.
INEC is responsible for conducting the polls, while security agencies are expected to provide the environment necessary for voters and election officials to carry out their duties.
The results will determine the politicians who will occupy the vacant legislative seats until the end of the relevant electoral cycle.
