Former Speakers and Deputy Speakers of Nigeria’s State Houses of Assembly, operating under the Forum of Former Presiding Officers of State Houses of Assembly of Nigeria (FOPSHAN), have endorsed President Bola Tinubu for a second term in the 2027 general elections.
The endorsement was adopted as a resolution at the forum’s national summit in Abuja on Thursday.
The summit was held under the theme, “Bold Leadership, Bold Reforms: From Subsidy to Renewed Hope – Affecting the Economic Trajectory and Digital Leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Administration.”
The former presiding officers also pledged to mobilise their supporters at the grassroots in support of the president’s re-election bid.
The resolution represents an organisational endorsement by the former legislators and does not itself determine the outcome of the 2027 election.
Forum backs economic reforms
The former lawmakers also discussed major policy changes implemented by the Tinubu administration, including the removal of the petrol subsidy, changes in federal revenue allocation and efforts to strengthen local government financial autonomy.
FOPSHAN National Chairman Senator Wasiu Eshilokun Sani said the summit was convened to enable former legislators to examine the consequences of major government policies and contribute their experience to national development.
He said reforms should be assessed not merely through political support but also through their implementation and impact on citizens.
The forum called for stronger legislative oversight, fiscal responsibility, stronger democratic institutions and greater devolution of powers.
The position reflects the broader political debate surrounding the Tinubu administration as parties and political groups begin preparations for the 2027 general elections.
First Lady welcomes endorsement
First Lady Oluremi Tinubu welcomed the endorsement, describing it as significant because it came from former presiding officers with experience in legislative and governance processes.
Other political figures who spoke at the summit also expressed support for aspects of the administration’s reform programme.
Former Plateau State governor Simon Lalong, for example, argued that the reforms needed sufficient time for their benefits to become fully evident.
The endorsement adds another political bloc to the growing 2027 campaign landscape, where political parties, former officeholders and interest groups are increasingly declaring their positions on the presidential contest.
