Currency records marginal appreciation at Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market

The Nigerian naira recorded a marginal appreciation against the United States dollar at the official foreign exchange market on Friday, September 18, 2026.

Data published through the Central Bank of Nigeria’s official foreign exchange platform showed the currency traded at N1,331.2027 per dollar at the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market (NFEM).

The market subsequently closed at N1,329.9900 per dollar.

Marginal movement from previous session

The Friday NFEM rate represented a slight improvement from the N1,331.2812 per dollar recorded on Thursday, September 17.

The movement amounted to an appreciation of less than 10 kobo at the quoted NFEM rate.

The closing rate of N1,329.9900 was also below the day’s reported NFEM rate.

Parallel market remained higher

Reports on the same trading day placed the parallel-market rate significantly above the official market level.

The naira was reported to have traded around N1,385 per dollar for buying and N1,390 for selling in the parallel market.

The difference between official and parallel-market quotations highlights the continuing spread between rates in Nigeria’s formal foreign exchange market and informal trading channels.

FX market remains closely watched

Movements in the naira remain important for importers, manufacturers, businesses and consumers because exchange-rate changes affect the cost of imported goods, production inputs and other foreign-currency obligations.

The latest official-market movement comes as the Central Bank continues to publish NFEM rates as part of the country’s foreign-exchange market framework.
