Veteran entertainer says his role is to advise rather than control his adult daughter’s decisions
Veteran Nigerian entertainer Charles Chukwuemeka Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, has defended his daughter following her engagement to a female partner.
Responding to criticism over the relationship, the entertainer said he could not dictate how a 50-year-old adult should live her life.
Charly Boy made the comments in a post on social media while addressing reactions to his daughter Adaeze’s engagement.
‘I don’t have remote control’
Charly Boy said his daughter was old enough to make decisions about her own life.
He said his responsibility as a father was to offer advice and express his views rather than attempt to control the choices of an adult.
“How you wan tell 50-year-old woman how to live her life?” he wrote, adding that he had no “remote control” over another adult’s life.
He also noted that his daughter had children and a grandchild of her own, underscoring her status as an independent adult.
Engagement announced online
Adaeze had earlier announced the engagement on Instagram, sharing images with her partner and writing that they were engaged.
Charly Boy also shared footage from the engagement and asked his followers to wish the couple well.
His public response followed criticism from some social-media users over the engagement.
The entertainer has long been known for outspoken views on social and political issues, and his latest comments have generated renewed discussion online about parental authority, adult autonomy and family relationships.
