Portugal midfielder Bruno Fernandes has publicly reaffirmed Cristiano Ronaldo’s place in the country’s football history, describing the veteran forward as the greatest icon of the national team and insisting that the squad remains united amid recent controversy.

Fernandes said he had spoken directly with Ronaldo and repeated the message during comments to reporters on Saturday, October 3.

“I spoke with Cristiano Ronaldo and told him that he is and will always remain the GREATEST icon of our national team and our country,” Fernandes said.

The Manchester United midfielder also called for disagreements to be resolved internally, adding that the national team was “united, not divided”.

Ronaldo’s departure sparks debate

Fernandes’ comments follow Ronaldo’s departure from Portugal’s national team camp after he learned he would not start a Nations League match against Denmark.

Reports said the 41-year-old forward was unhappy after being left out of the starting line-up and subsequently left the camp. Portugal won the match 4–2 without him.

The incident prompted debate over Ronaldo’s role in the team, his relationship with head coach Jorge Jesus and the veteran player’s future with the national side.

Ronaldo remains Portugal’s leading international goalscorer and one of the most prominent figures in the country’s football history.

Fernandes calls for unity

Fernandes rejected suggestions that the dispute had divided the squad, stressing that issues involving players and team management should be resolved within the team.

“Matters must be resolved internally and conclude well for both parties,” he said.

His remarks appear intended to emphasise respect for Ronaldo’s contribution while avoiding a public escalation of the disagreement.

Portugal coach Jorge Jesus has also described Ronaldo as a symbol of the national team and the country, while indicating that he would address the wider situation after the team’s final match in the current international window.

Ronaldo’s international future remains a talking point

The episode has placed renewed attention on the relationship between an established football icon and a national team adapting to its current tactical and personnel needs.

The coach’s selection decisions, Ronaldo’s response and discussions within the Portuguese Football Federation will shape what happens next.

Fernandes’ public comments underline the respect Ronaldo continues to command among his teammates, but they do not resolve questions about the player’s future role in the squad.

For now, the midfielder’s message is that disagreements should be handled internally and that the team should remain focused on its football commitments.
