Nigeria’s Super Eagles produced a dramatic comeback to earn a 3–3 draw against Russia in an entertaining international friendly on Tuesday.

The six-goal encounter in Nizhny Novgorod saw Nigeria fall behind before fighting back to rescue a point in the closing stages.

Akor Adams scored the late equaliser as the Super Eagles refused to surrender after being forced to chase the game for much of the encounter.

Russia had established a two-goal advantage, but Nigeria gradually worked its way back into the contest.

Kelechi Iheanacho was among Nigeria’s goalscorers, while debutant Peter Edokpolor also found the net as the Super Eagles mounted their comeback. Adams then completed the recovery with a stoppage-time strike to make it 3–3.

The result gave Nigeria another competitive test as the national team continues preparations for future international assignments.

For head coach Eric Chelle, the encounter provided an opportunity to assess players and combinations against a Russian side capable of posing a significant physical and tactical challenge.

The late comeback was particularly encouraging from a character perspective. Rather than allowing the deficit to determine the outcome, Nigeria continued to push forward and eventually found the decisive goal deep into the match.

Adams’ late strike also ensured that Nigeria avoided defeat after conceding three goals, turning what initially appeared to be a disappointing result into an entertaining draw.

The fixture formed part of the current international window and offered Chelle another opportunity to evaluate the depth available to him as he continues to shape the Super Eagles.

Beyond the scoreline, the performance highlighted both the strengths and weaknesses of the Nigerian side. The ability to score three goals and recover from a two-goal deficit demonstrated attacking resilience, while conceding three goals also underlined areas that will require attention in more competitive fixtures.

The Super Eagles will take confidence from the fight shown in the second half, particularly the refusal to accept defeat after Russia had taken control of the contest.

The 3–3 result ultimately reflected a match in which neither side was prepared to settle for a cautious approach, producing six goals and a dramatic finish for supporters.

For Nigeria, the comeback may prove more valuable than the point itself as Chelle continues the process of building a team capable of competing consistently at the highest level.
