The Federal Government and the Lagos State Government have intensified collaboration aimed at improving electricity supply across the state as authorities seek practical solutions to persistent power-sector challenges.

The commitment was reached during a Ministerial Implementation Retreat on the Clean Lagos Electricity Market (CLEM) hosted by the Lagos State Government on Monday.

The Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, said the meeting was designed to move beyond policy discussions and focus on practical interventions capable of improving the reliability and efficiency of Lagos’ electricity market.

Focus shifts to implementation

The initiative brings federal and state stakeholders together to address structural challenges affecting electricity generation, transmission, distribution and supply within Lagos.

Officials are seeking closer coordination among government institutions and other players in the electricity value chain as the state works towards a more stable power supply.

Lagos is particularly significant to Nigeria’s electricity market because of its large population, industrial base and substantial commercial demand.

Push for more reliable electricity

The Federal Government has previously outlined plans to increase the amount of electricity that can be transmitted to Lagos, while the state government has continued to pursue measures aimed at reducing dependence on an unreliable grid supply.

The latest retreat signals an attempt to translate those policy objectives into specific implementation measures.

Authorities say stronger coordination will be necessary to create an electricity market capable of supporting businesses, industries and households across the state.
