The Federal Government has taken over Sir Patrick Ibrahim Yakowa Memorial Hospital in Kafanchan, Kaduna State, following an agreement with the state government to facilitate its conversion into a Federal Medical Centre.

The arrangement was formalised through the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the Federal Government and the Kaduna State Government on Thursday in Abuja.

The development is expected to expand access to specialist and tertiary healthcare services for residents of Southern Kaduna and neighbouring communities.

The Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr Iziaq Adekunle Salako, said the initiative would bring higher-level medical services closer to residents of Jema’a Local Government Area and surrounding communities.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Salako described the agreement as more than an administrative transfer, saying it represented a step towards implementing President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and promoting inclusive healthcare delivery.

The conversion is expected to provide a foundation for expanded specialist services, improved medical infrastructure and stronger referral capacity.

For residents of Southern Kaduna, the facility could reduce the financial and logistical burden associated with travelling long distances to access specialised consultations, diagnostic procedures and advanced treatment.

However, the practical benefits will depend on the Federal Government’s ability to equip the hospital, deploy qualified personnel, provide adequate funding and maintain reliable services.

The agreement therefore marks an important step towards expanding tertiary healthcare access in the area, with the quality and availability of services likely to determine its long-term impact.
