Popular Nigerian streamer and entertainer Peller has sparked debate after advising Yoruba and Igbo people against marrying partners from their respective ethnic groups, arguing that intertribal relationships could offer a different experience.

The social media personality made the remarks while discussing relationships and marriage, suggesting that people from the same ethnic background may share similar cultural knowledge and ways of thinking.

According to Peller, marrying someone from another ethnic group could introduce partners to different perspectives and experiences, making the relationship more interesting.

“If you are a Yoruba and want to marry a Yoruba in 2026, bro, your life is finish. And if you are Igbo, you want to marry Igbo, your life is finish,” he said.

Explaining his position, the entertainer argued that people from the same cultural background may already understand many of each other’s customs, expressions and social expectations.

He used his own preference for a Benin woman as an example, suggesting that marrying outside his Yoruba background would bring a different dynamic to his relationship.

Peller also referenced his parents, who are both Yoruba, while using his personal experiences to encourage young people to consider relationships across ethnic lines.

His remarks have drawn attention to the broader conversation about ethnic identity, cultural differences and partner selection among young Nigerians.

Nigeria is home to hundreds of ethnic groups, each with distinct languages, traditions and cultural practices. Interethnic relationships and marriages have long formed part of the country’s social fabric, bringing together individuals and families from different backgrounds.

However, successful marriages depend on a range of factors, including mutual respect, communication, shared values, compatibility and the willingness of partners to navigate differences.

While Peller’s comments reflect his personal opinion, the decision to marry within or outside one’s ethnic group ultimately rests with the individuals involved.
