The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has criticised the reported distribution of seven luxury sport utility vehicles (SUVs), estimated to be worth about ₦1 billion, to youth leaders of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), describing the move as insensitive to the economic difficulties facing Nigerians.

The opposition party said the reported gesture raised questions about the priorities of political leaders at a time when many households are struggling to afford food, transportation and other essential goods.

The ADC’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, criticised the development on Monday, arguing that the reported expenditure reflected a widening gap between the sacrifices expected of ordinary Nigerians and the privileges enjoyed by political officeholders and party officials.

In a statement, Abdullahi questioned the contrast between calls for citizens to endure economic hardship and reports of expensive vehicles being provided to political operatives.

“President Tinubu asks Nigerians to endure hardship while his party distributes luxury vehicles to its political operatives. Apparently, sacrifice is for ordinary Nigerians, while luxury is reserved for those working to keep the APC in power,” Abdullahi said.

He further argued that the reported distribution demonstrated the ruling party’s ability to mobilise resources for its political activities while Nigerians continued to demand more effective measures to ease the cost of living.

“The APC has found the resources to move its campaign officials around Nigeria. What it has failed to find is a convincing way to make life affordable for the Nigerians whose votes it now seeks,” he added.

Opposition Questions Government Priorities

The criticism comes amid an increasingly competitive political environment ahead of the 2027 general election, with the APC defending President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s economic reforms and opposition parties questioning their impact on ordinary citizens.

Since taking office in May 2023, Tinubu’s administration has introduced major changes to fuel subsidy and foreign exchange policies, arguing that the measures are necessary to address structural weaknesses, improve public finances and attract investment.

However, the reforms have also contributed to higher living costs, with food prices, transportation expenses and energy costs remaining significant concerns for many households.

The ADC has repeatedly criticised the government’s handling of the economy, arguing that improvements in financial indicators must translate into tangible benefits for citizens.

The reported provision of luxury vehicles to APC youth leaders has therefore become another point of contention in the political debate over spending priorities and the use of resources by political organisations.

Questions Over the Reported Expenditure

While the ADC cited an estimated value of about ₦1 billion for the seven vehicles, the information provided in its criticism does not independently establish the purchase price, funding source or precise circumstances surrounding the reported distribution.

Those details are important in assessing the expenditure and determining whether the vehicles were purchased with public funds, party resources or another source of financing.

The distinction matters because allegations of wasteful spending or the misuse of public resources require evidence beyond the reported value of an asset or the political affiliation of its recipient.

Nevertheless, the ADC’s reaction highlights the scrutiny that political parties face over their spending decisions during a period of economic pressure.

Political Spending Under Public Scrutiny

As parties prepare for the 2027 elections, questions about campaign financing, political mobilisation and the use of resources are likely to remain prominent.

For the APC, defending its economic record will involve demonstrating how its reforms are improving living standards and expanding opportunities for Nigerians.

For opposition parties, criticism of the government’s spending priorities forms part of a broader effort to challenge the administration’s performance and present alternative approaches to governance.

The debate over the reported SUVs underscores a wider question confronting Nigeria’s political leadership: how to balance the financial demands of party organisation with public expectations of accountability, restraint and responsiveness to economic hardship.
