Abba Atiku Abubakar, son of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, has declared support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid, unveiling a nationwide mobilisation strategy aimed at securing victory for the incumbent in the 2027 presidential election.
Abba announced his position on Friday at the national secretariat of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abuja, where he led members of his support group, the Haske Bola Tinubu Organisation (HBTO), to present 10 buses to support the party’s mobilisation activities.
The development places him on the opposite side of the political contest from his father, Atiku Abubakar, who is seeking the presidency on the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Speaking to journalists, Abba maintained that his decision to support Tinubu was based on personal conviction and his assessment of the administration’s policies rather than an attempt to oppose his father’s political ambition.
He argued that individuals should be free to make independent political choices based on their understanding of government policies and what they believe would benefit the country.
Abba also unveiled plans for a two-million-man mobilisation march spanning Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones as part of efforts to build support for Tinubu ahead of the next general election.
The initiative is expected to involve establishing grassroots structures, engaging community leaders and mobilising youth and women’s organisations across the country.
The group also plans to work with political stakeholders and support organisations to strengthen the President’s re-election campaign.
Abba cited initiatives such as the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, investments in road infrastructure and increased allocations to state governments through the Federation Account Allocation Committee as factors informing his support for the administration.
He acknowledged that the government’s economic reforms had required difficult adjustments but argued that their potential long-term benefits should also be considered.
The presentation of the 10 buses forms part of the organisation’s proposed mobilisation and transportation support activities, beginning in Abuja, with plans to expand its operations to other parts of the country.
The group also intends to mobilise support for Tinubu in the Federal Capital Territory and Rivers State as it develops its national political structure.
Abba’s declaration adds another dimension to the political alignments emerging ahead of the 2027 elections, particularly as opposition figures and ruling-party supporters intensify efforts to build their respective coalitions.
While his endorsement may attract attention because of his family relationship with the ADC presidential candidate, the electoral impact of the mobilisation plan will ultimately depend on the group’s ability to translate its announced strategy into support among voters.
