A police officer was seriously injured on Monday after armed robbers trailed and attacked a bank customer close to the Oyo State Secretariat, Agodi, in Ibadan, carting away an undisclosed sum of money.

According to the Oyo State Police Command, the shocking incident happened around 8 a.m. when the victim, who had just withdrawn cash from a bank, was driving along Secretariat Road in a metallic grey Nissan Primera.

The state’s Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Adewale Osifeso, who confirmed the incident in a statement released to journalists, said the robbers had strategically followed their target before striking.

“A robbery incident occurred on Secretariat Road, Agodi, involving a bank depositor driving a metallic grey Nissan Primera with registration number EPE 901 PS. The individual was attacked and robbed of a substantial, yet-to-be-determined sum of money,” Osifeso said.

He added that one police officer sustained serious injuries during an attempt by the patrol team to engage the robbers and prevent their escape.

“Preliminary investigation reveals that a police officer from the Oyo Command suffered severe injuries while confronting the armed suspects in an effort to foil the attack and maintain order,” the statement read.

No deaths were recorded in the incident, and the injured officer is currently receiving urgent medical treatment at a secure hospital, Osifeso added.

The police have now launched a full-scale investigation and are urging members of the public to share any information that could help track down the suspects.

“The Command appeals to residents with credible intelligence regarding the incident to contact the nearest police station immediately,” Osifeso advised.
