The Imo governor’s move toward the Senate is already triggering political calculations over who may inherit power before 2028.

Fresh political tension is building in Imo State after Hope Uzodimma was officially screened by the ruling All Progressives Congress for the Imo West Senatorial seat ahead of the 2027 National Assembly election.

The screening reportedly took place in Abuja under the supervision of APC National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, further fueling speculations that the governor is preparing for a strategic political transition after completing his second term in Douglas House.

The development has immediately sparked conversations across political circles in Imo, especially over what may happen if Uzodimma wins the Senate seat and is sworn in by June 2027. Political observers note that such a victory would force him to resign as governor roughly six to seven months before the expiration of his tenure in January 2028.

Should that happen, the deputy governor would constitutionally take over the affairs of the state for the remainder of the administration — a scenario already generating quiet lobbying, alignments, and succession calculations within the APC structure in Imo State.

Supporters of the governor describe the Senate move as a strategic continuation of leadership and influence at the national level, while critics argue it may trigger fresh power struggles within the party. The move also signals that the battle for Imo’s political future may have unofficially begun long before the 2027 governorship campaigns fully kick off.

As reactions continue to trail the screening, many political stakeholders are now watching closely to see whether Uzodimma’s senatorial ambition will reshape the balance of power within Imo APC and beyond.
