Suspected Lakurawa gunmen launch deadly assault on security checkpoints in Kebbi State
Fresh fear has gripped residents of Kebbi State after suspected Lakurawa terrorists reportedly killed two officers of the Nigeria Customs Service during a brutal overnight attack in Bagudu Local Government Area.
According to multiple reports, the attackers stormed security checkpoints in the Tuga community around 3am, catching officers off guard during the coordinated assault. One junior officer was reportedly shot dead, while a senior officer was allegedly burnt alive after the gunmen set fire to the structure where he was sleeping.
Sources familiar with the incident claimed the terrorists disguised themselves using a truck allegedly loaded with animals before launching the attack. Two additional officers reportedly sustained gunshot injuries and are currently receiving treatment. The attackers also allegedly burnt operational vehicles during the raid.
The Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adeniyi, later confirmed that two officers died during what he described as a counter-offensive operation against Lakurawa terrorists. He identified the slain operatives as Assistant Superintendent Bamigboye and Deputy Superintendent Dom, praising their sacrifice in defending border communities.
The latest attack has once again exposed growing insecurity across Nigeria’s border regions, where armed groups continue to target security formations and local communities. Residents in affected areas have repeatedly raised alarm over recurring attacks, kidnappings, and increasing terrorist movements near border communities.
Security agencies are yet to release a comprehensive operational update, but the incident has already sparked nationwide concern over the worsening security crisis in northern Nigeria and the dangers faced daily by frontline personnel.
