Lawmakers say recent kidnappings and attacks on schools have renewed the urgency for decentralised policing across Nigeria.

The House of Representatives has renewed its call for the implementation of state police, citing growing insecurity and recent attacks on schools as evidence that existing security arrangements require urgent review.

The move follows concerns raised over the abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State, a development that has intensified national conversations around community security and the protection of educational institutions.

During deliberations, lawmakers called on the Federal Government and security agencies to intensify rescue efforts while also considering structural reforms capable of improving response times and local intelligence gathering.

The House also urged accelerated legislative action on state policing, arguing that the current security realities demand broader solutions beyond emergency responses to individual incidents.

The debate comes amid mounting concern over attacks targeting schools and communities, with lawmakers insisting that long-term security reforms must remain part of the national conversation.
