Senegal’s President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has been elected the new Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, succeeding Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio. His emergence came during the 69th Ordinary Summit of ECOWAS in Freetown, where regional leaders also discussed security, democratic governance and economic integration across West Africa.
West African leaders have chosen Senegal’s President Bassirou Diomaye Faye to lead the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), entrusting him with steering the regional bloc through one of its most challenging periods in recent history.
Faye’s election was one of the major outcomes of the 69th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government held in Freetown, Sierra Leone.
The Senegalese leader succeeds President Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone, who chaired the regional bloc over the past year.
His tenure begins as ECOWAS continues to grapple with political instability, terrorism, constitutional transitions in parts of West Africa and efforts to deepen regional economic cooperation.
In his acceptance remarks, Faye pledged to strengthen regional unity, improve security cooperation and accelerate economic integration among member states.
Leaders at the summit also reaffirmed their commitment to democratic governance, institutional reforms and the implementation of the ECOWAS Vision 2050 agenda.
The summit also endorsed new regional cooperation initiatives, including major infrastructure and energy projects aimed at boosting trade and connectivity across West Africa.
Analysts say Faye’s leadership will be closely watched as ECOWAS seeks to rebuild confidence and reinforce its role as the region’s leading political and economic institution.
Faye’s election marks a new chapter for ECOWAS at a time when regional cooperation is increasingly being tested by security, political and economic challenges. His administration is expected to focus on strengthening unity among member states while advancing regional development initiatives.
