Presidential spokesman Daniel Bwala has accused Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), of cultivating what he described as a movement of “political extremists,” alleging that the former Anambra governor has failed to rein in supporters who attack perceived opponents online. Bwala also insisted that Obi does not pose a serious electoral threat to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 election.
The war of words ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election has intensified, with presidential spokesman Daniel Bwala launching a fresh attack on opposition figure Peter Obi.
Bwala alleged that Obi has built a political movement driven by “extremism” rather than democratic engagement, claiming the former governor has consistently failed to condemn or discourage abusive conduct by some of his supporters on social media.
According to Bwala, the political momentum surrounding Obi has weakened since the 2023 election, arguing that online popularity does not automatically translate into votes at the ballot box.
He maintained that President Bola Tinubu remains politically stronger due to the ruling APC’s nationwide structure, governance record and established grassroots network across the country.
Bwala alleged that some members of the Obidient movement have adopted confrontational tactics against critics, journalists and public officials.
He argued that political leadership extends beyond campaign speeches and requires candidates to publicly discourage actions capable of deepening political divisions. Obi has repeatedly maintained that his movement is rooted in peaceful democratic participation and has, on previous occasions, urged supporters to remain law-abiding.
The exchange comes as political parties continue repositioning ahead of the 2027 general election, with campaign rhetoric becoming increasingly sharp despite the official campaign period still being some distance away.
Analysts expect more political confrontations as parties seek to shape public perception before formal campaigns begin.
Bwala’s remarks add another chapter to the growing rivalry between the Tinubu administration and opposition figures. With both camps stepping up political messaging, debates over leadership, governance and electoral strength are expected to dominate Nigeria’s political landscape in the months ahead.
