The Ondo State Police Command has arrested four police officers captured in a viral video allegedly making ethnically insensitive remarks and displaying unprofessional conduct during a stop-and-search operation along the Lagos–Benin Expressway.
The Ondo State Police Command has detained four of its officers after a video showing them making alleged ethnic remarks and engaging in unprofessional conduct during a roadside stop-and-search operation sparked widespread outrage on social media.
The incident, which occurred along the Lagos–Benin Expressway, drew public criticism after one of the officers was heard allegedly telling a motorist, “If you are Igbo, I will detain you,” prompting accusations of ethnic profiling and abuse of power.
Officers Identified
The Command confirmed that the officers involved have been identified and taken into custody pending the outcome of an internal investigation.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, the arrested officers are:
- ASP Elomore Sodayo
- Inspector Adefila Adewale
- Inspector Olorunfemi Opeyemi
- Inspector Odusola Peter
The officers are expected to face disciplinary proceedings if found culpable.
Police Order Full Investigation
Commissioner of Police Felix Ohagwu directed an immediate investigation into the incident, assuring the public that the Nigeria Police Force would not tolerate misconduct, ethnic profiling or actions capable of undermining public confidence in law enforcement.
The command also reiterated its commitment to professionalism, respect for human rights and accountability.
Viral Video Sparked Outrage
The video, widely shared across social media platforms, reportedly involved a motorist said to be a UK returnee, who challenged the officers over what he described as intimidation, attempted extortion and discriminatory comments.
The footage reignited conversations about police conduct during stop-and-search operations and renewed calls for greater accountability within the force.
Police Reassure Nigerians
The Ondo Police Command appealed to members of the public to remain calm while investigations continue, promising that appropriate sanctions would be imposed if the officers are found guilty of violating police ethics and operational guidelines.
