Operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS), working with the Kwara State Forest Guards, local hunters and vigilantes, have rescued nine kidnapped victims and killed three suspected bandits during an intelligence-led operation in Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State.
The operation was carried out in the Obbo Aiyegunle, Ejiu Ora and Osi axis, a border area between Kwara and Ekiti states, following intelligence on the movement of armed kidnappers transporting their victims through the forest.
Gun Battle Ends in Rescue
Security sources said the joint team intercepted the kidnappers as they attempted to move the abducted victims toward Niger State. A fierce gun battle ensued, forcing the kidnappers to abandon their captives and flee.
Three suspected bandits were killed during the exchange of gunfire, while the remaining members of the gang escaped into the surrounding forest.
Victims Freed, One Injured
All nine kidnapped victims were rescued alive during the operation.
According to local officials, one of the victims sustained serious head injuries after reportedly being attacked with a machete while resisting abduction. The injured victim is receiving medical treatment.
Intelligence-Led Security Operation
The successful rescue was the result of coordinated intelligence gathering involving the DSS, Kwara Forest Guards, local hunters and community vigilantes.
Authorities described the operation as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen security across border communities that have witnessed repeated incidents of kidnapping and armed attacks.
Security agencies have pledged to sustain operations aimed at tracking down the fleeing suspects and dismantling criminal hideouts operating within the forest corridor.
