Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has inaugurated a Judicial Commission of Inquiry to investigate the abduction of pupils and teachers from schools in Oriire Local Government Area, saying the successful rescue of the victims does not end the need to uncover how the attack happened and prevent a recurrence.
The panel was inaugurated at the Executive Council Chamber of the Governor’s Office in Ibadan and has been mandated to establish the circumstances surrounding the May 2026 abduction, identify any security lapses, and recommend measures to strengthen the protection of schools and communities across the state.
Panel to Uncover What Went Wrong
Governor Makinde said the commission was not established to undermine the work of security agencies but to ensure every aspect of the incident is thoroughly examined.
According to him, while the safe return of the abducted pupils and teachers brought relief, the state owes residents a full account of what transpired and how similar attacks can be prevented in the future.
Focus on Security Failures
The commission is expected to investigate the security breach that enabled gunmen to attack schools in Esinele and Yawota communities in Oriire LGA before abducting dozens of pupils and teachers.
Its findings will also include recommendations aimed at strengthening school security and improving the state’s emergency response system.
Victims Rescued After Weeks in Captivity
The abduction sparked nationwide outrage before the victims were eventually rescued after spending several weeks in captivity.
Makinde said the inquiry reflects his administration’s commitment to ensuring accountability while preventing similar incidents in the future.
