The African Democratic Congress (ADC) says its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, can defeat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election without depending on a broad opposition coalition.
ADC National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, made the declaration during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today.
Abdullahi said the party remains confident in its ability to win the election independently, despite the failure of earlier efforts to build a broad opposition coalition.
He acknowledged that a wider alliance could make the contest easier for the opposition but insisted that it was not essential to an ADC victory.
The opposition coalition had initially brought together several prominent political figures and groups seeking to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
However, the political landscape changed significantly after Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso moved to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), where they now occupy leading positions ahead of the 2027 election.
Abdullahi said the ADC was still open to cooperation with other opposition parties, but the discussions had shifted away from forcing all parties to produce one presidential candidate.
Instead, he said opposition parties could cooperate in areas such as election monitoring and protecting votes.
He maintained that the ADC’s focus was now on strengthening its grassroots structure and mobilising voters behind Atiku.
The comments come as political parties intensify preparations for the 2027 presidential election, with Tinubu, Atiku and Obi emerging as major figures in the developing contest.
The ADC’s confidence marks a shift from the earlier emphasis on a single opposition coalition and suggests that the party is preparing to pursue its own electoral strategy while remaining open to selective cooperation.
Channels Television reported that Abdullahi said the party believed Atiku could win without the coalition.
