Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has ordered the immediate suspension of all activities of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in motor parks across the state as part of measures to restore order and strengthen public security.
Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has directed the immediate suspension of all activities of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in motor parks across the state following rising security concerns linked to violent clashes among rival transport union factions.
The directive was issued after a meeting of the Osun State Security Council chaired by the governor on Thursday. According to the state government, the decision is aimed at restoring peace and preventing further breakdown of law and order in public motor parks.
Security Agencies Ordered to Enforce Directive
In a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, Governor Adeleke directed the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to immediately halt all NURTW activities in motor parks across Osun State.
The governor clarified that the directive does not amount to the closure of motor parks, but only the suspension of union activities pending further government directives.
Levy Collection Suspended
As part of the measures, Adeleke also ordered the suspension of the collection of levies in all motor parks.
He further directed security agencies to arrest anyone who parades himself as an official or executive of the NURTW in any motor park during the suspension period.
According to the government, the move is intended to curb violence and eliminate activities capable of threatening public peace.
Decision Follows Violent Clashes
The latest directive comes days after violent confrontations between rival factions of transport unions in parts of Osun State.
The clashes reportedly resulted in gunfire and heightened tension in several motor parks, prompting earlier interventions by the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Osun chapter, which had also announced the suspension of transport union activities in public parks.
Governor Adeleke said the government would continue to monitor the security situation and review the suspension when normalcy has been fully restored.
Transport union leadership disputes have periodically triggered violent clashes in parts of Osun State.
State authorities have repeatedly intervened through security deployments and administrative measures to prevent further violence and ensure the safety of commuters, transport operators and residents.
