Human rights activist Aisha Yesufu has explained why she rejected an offer to contest for a House of Representatives seat on the platform of the Nigeria Democratic Congress ahead of the 2027 elections.
Yesufu said she declined the offer because she was uncomfortable with the process through which the ticket was being considered.
According to her account, about 20 people had already obtained nomination forms and were competing for the position.
She argued that accepting the ticket would have disadvantaged those aspirants who had already invested money and effort in the process.
Yesufu described the arrangement as unfair, saying she would rather lose an opportunity than benefit from a process she considered unjust.
Her explanation comes after NDC figures disclosed that the party and its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, had offered her an opportunity to contest for a House of Representatives seat.
Former Bayelsa State Governor and NDC chieftain Seriake Dickson previously said he and Obi offered Yesufu the ticket, but that she declined it.
Yesufu subsequently pursued the FCT senatorial race but withdrew from the contest after the party decided not to conduct primaries for the seat.
Her decision has since generated discussion about candidate-selection processes within the opposition party as political parties prepare for the 2027 general elections.
Yesufu has continued to participate in political discussions despite stepping away from the FCT Senate contest.
Her latest explanation suggests that her decision was driven primarily by concerns about the integrity of the selection process rather than a rejection of political participation altogether.
