Arsenal have agreed a deal worth around £50 million to sign England defender Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa, according to current reports, as Mikel Arteta moves to strengthen his defence ahead of the new Premier League season.
The agreement represents a significant development in Arsenal’s pursuit of defensive reinforcements after injuries to key players have left the Premier League champions short of options.
Konsa has emerged as one of Arsenal’s principal targets during the transfer window, with the club increasingly focused on adding an experienced defender capable of operating in more than one position.
According to talkSPORT, Arsenal have verbally agreed a deal worth approximately £50 million with Aston Villa, while personal terms with the player have already been finalised. Konsa is expected to undergo a medical on Thursday.
The agreement marks a significant change from the position earlier in the transfer window.
Arsenal had previously made an offer believed to be around £35 million, but Aston Villa rejected the proposal because it fell substantially below the club’s valuation of the England international.
Villa had initially valued Konsa at around £60 million or more.
The two clubs have now moved closer to an agreement, with Arsenal reportedly meeting Villa at approximately the £50 million mark.
The transfer has been driven in part by Arsenal’s defensive injury problems.
William Saliba is expected to be unavailable for an extended period because of a back problem, while Jurrien Timber has also been dealing with a groin injury.
Those absences have reduced Arteta’s defensive options at a time when Arsenal are preparing to begin their Premier League title defence.
Konsa’s versatility is therefore particularly attractive.
Although primarily a central defender, the England international can also operate at right-back, giving Arteta additional tactical flexibility.
That versatility is consistent with Arsenal’s recent recruitment strategy, in which players capable of covering multiple positions have become increasingly valuable.
Konsa’s performances have also enhanced his reputation.
The 28-year-old has established himself as an important player for Aston Villa and has also featured prominently for England.
His ability to defend one-on-one situations, carry the ball forward and contribute to build-up play makes him a profile that fits Arsenal’s requirements.
The potential move would also bring an end to Konsa’s spell at Villa Park if the transfer is completed.
He has been an important part of Villa’s recent rise and has helped the club compete in European football.
For Arsenal, however, the immediate priority is depth.
The club begins the new season with ambitions of defending its Premier League title while also competing on multiple fronts.
Arteta therefore needs enough quality across the squad to withstand injuries and the demands of a long campaign.
The Konsa deal also illustrates how quickly Arsenal’s transfer priorities have evolved.
Earlier in the month, the club’s pursuit of Konsa appeared uncertain after Villa rejected the initial offer and maintained a much higher valuation.
Arsenal subsequently explored alternatives, including Bayer Leverkusen defender Jarell Quansah. The Guardian reported that Arsenal had opened talks with Leverkusen over Quansah while also continuing to assess its defensive options.
The progress on the Konsa deal now suggests Arsenal have returned to their original priority.
However, the transfer should not yet be described as fully completed.
Reports indicate that a medical is scheduled and that the agreement still needs to pass through the final formal stages.
That distinction matters.
Until the medical is completed and the clubs formally announce the transfer, “Arsenal agree deal” is more accurate than “Konsa is officially an Arsenal player.”
If the move is completed, Konsa would become another significant addition to a squad already strengthened during the summer.
The signing would also increase competition within Arteta’s defence once Saliba and Timber return to full fitness.
For Villa, the departure of an established England international would represent another major change to the squad during a summer that has already seen several players leave.
For Arsenal, meanwhile, the focus is straightforward: add enough defensive quality to ensure injuries do not derail their attempt to retain the Premier League crown.
The final step now is Konsa’s medical and the completion of the formal transfer process.
Until then, the most accurate description is that Arsenal have agreed a deal to sign him, but the move is not yet officially completed.
