Nigeria’s Super Falcons have crashed out of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations after suffering a narrow 1–0 defeat to Cameroon in the quarter-final on Sunday.
Cameroon secured victory through Myriam Maéva Nyadjou Wamen, who scored in the first half to give the Indomitable Lionesses a decisive advantage.
Nigeria dominated possession and created several opportunities in search of an equaliser, but Cameroon’s defence and goalkeeper held firm to preserve their lead until the final whistle.
The defeat represents a major setback for the Super Falcons, who entered the competition as defending champions and one of the tournament’s traditional favourites.
The result also ends Nigeria’s campaign at the quarter-final stage, denying the nine-time African champions an opportunity to continue their pursuit of another continental title.
Cameroon’s victory sends the Indomitable Lionesses into the semi-finals and represents a major statement from a side that has historically been one of Nigeria’s biggest rivals in women’s football. FIFA records also note Cameroon’s previous quarter-final defeat to Nigeria at the tournament.
The 2026 WAFCON is being staged in Morocco from July 25 to August 16, with the competition also serving as an important pathway in the qualification race for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
For the Super Falcons, attention will now turn to rebuilding after a disappointing exit from a competition they entered with high expectations.
