Michael Carrick has been left with plenty to address after Manchester United suffered a damaging 2–0 defeat to newly promoted Hull City in their opening Premier League match of the season.

United travelled to the MKM Stadium with optimism surrounding Carrick’s first full season as permanent manager, but Hull produced a disciplined display to expose weaknesses in the visitors’ performance.

Semi Ajayi put Hull ahead in the 17th minute before Nobel Mendy doubled the advantage before half-time.

United struggle to find a response

Manchester United struggled to create sustained pressure after falling behind.

Hull defended aggressively and remained organised, while United’s attacking players found it difficult to break through the home side’s defensive structure.

The visitors had 14 attempts during the match but could not find a goal.

Mbeumo had United’s clearest opportunity, but his effort was saved by Hull goalkeeper Tzolakis.

Carrick had hoped for a strong start after guiding United to third place following his appointment last season.

Instead, his side were beaten by a promoted team that had returned to the top flight for the first time in nine years.

Rashford’s return fails to change result

The game also marked Marcus Rashford’s return to the Manchester United squad.

Rashford had spent the previous 18 months on loan at Aston Villa and Barcelona after falling out of favour under former manager Ruben Amorim.

Carrick had praised Rashford’s condition and attitude before the match, saying the forward had returned to training in excellent physical shape.

However, his second-half introduction could not change the outcome.

Carrick faces early test

The defeat provides Carrick with an immediate challenge at the beginning of the campaign.

United’s problems were particularly evident at set pieces, with both Hull goals coming from situations originating from corners or free-kicks.

The result also ended United’s record of never losing to a newly promoted side in their opening Premier League fixture.

For Carrick, the priority will now be to identify why his team struggled to impose itself and ensure that the opening-day defeat does not develop into a wider problem.

Hull, meanwhile, have made an emphatic statement on their return to the Premier League.
