Billionaire industrialist Aliko Dangote has explained why his first grandson is not immediately joining the family business, saying the young electrical engineer wants to gain professional experience outside the conglomerate before entering the group.

Dangote disclosed this on Tuesday, September 29, while speaking at an investor engagement in Nairobi, Kenya, organised as part of engagements surrounding the planned initial public offering (IPO) of the Dangote Petroleum Refinery.

Discussing the future of his businesses and the possible involvement of younger family members, Dangote said his grandson wanted to develop his understanding of finance and business operations before joining the family enterprise.

“My first grandson, he’s not finding it interesting to work with me for now. He wants to go and get experience with KPMG or PwC. Then after he’ll come and join us,” Dangote said.

He added that although his grandson had trained as an electrical engineer, he wanted to learn more about money and business before taking up a role in the group.

Building Experience Beyond the Family Enterprise

Dangote’s remarks highlight the role of external professional experience in preparing younger family members for future responsibilities within large businesses.

Working outside a family-owned organisation can expose prospective successors to different management systems, corporate cultures and professional expectations before they assume positions within the family enterprise.

The comments came during an investor engagement linked to the proposed refinery IPO, which has drawn attention to the group’s future ownership structure, growth ambitions and relationship with capital markets.

Dangote did not indicate that his grandson had rejected the family business permanently. Rather, his remarks suggest that joining the group may come after the young engineer has gained experience elsewhere.
