The Federal Government has reacted to the latest 2026 Fiscal Transparency Report released by the United States Department of State, saying the assessment will serve as an external benchmark for strengthening Nigeria’s ongoing public financial management reforms.
The report places renewed attention on the transparency and accountability of government revenues, expenditures and budgetary processes.
The Federal Government said it would continue to review findings from international assessments as part of efforts to improve fiscal governance and strengthen the management of public resources.
The development comes after the United States raised concerns about Nigeria’s fiscal transparency, particularly regarding the adequacy of information provided in budget documents on government revenues and expenditures.
The US assessment also questioned the extent to which spending by executive offices is sufficiently disclosed and broken down.
Rather than dismissing the assessment, the Nigerian government said it would use the findings as a reference point in its reform efforts.
The response comes amid the administration’s broader push to reform Nigeria’s public finance system, improve revenue collection and strengthen accountability across government institutions.
Fiscal transparency has remained a major issue in discussions about Nigeria’s economic management, particularly as the government seeks to increase revenue while managing significant public expenditure and debt obligations.
The latest assessment is therefore likely to add further pressure on government agencies to improve the quality, accessibility and comprehensiveness of fiscal information made available to citizens and development partners.
The Federal Government’s position suggests that the report will be considered alongside ongoing reforms rather than treated as an isolated assessment.
