The United States Government has raised concerns over Nigeria’s fiscal transparency, saying the country has made insufficient progress in providing clear and comprehensive information about government revenues and expenditures.
The assessment was contained in the US Department of State’s 2026 Fiscal Transparency Report.
According to the report, Nigeria’s budget documents did not provide sufficient information on government revenues and expenditures and did not adequately break down spending by executive offices.
The report also highlighted concerns over discrepancies between Nigeria’s approved budget and actual revenue and expenditure figures.
Fiscal transparency is considered an important component of public accountability because it enables citizens, investors and other stakeholders to understand how government resources are generated and spent.
The latest assessment could add to existing scrutiny of Nigeria’s public finances as the Federal Government continues to defend its economic policies and fiscal reforms.
