Interior Ministry announces work-free day to honour Nigerian workers and mark International Labour Day

The Federal Government of Nigeria has declared Friday, May 1, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate this year’s International Workers’ Day, also known as Labour Day.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the federal government, in a statement released on April 29.

According to the ministry, the holiday is in recognition of the contributions of Nigerian workers to national development and economic growth. The minister commended workers across various sectors for their dedication and resilience, noting that their efforts remain central to the country’s progress.

Workers’ Day is observed annually on May 1 in Nigeria and across many countries worldwide, serving as a day to celebrate labour achievements and advocate for improved working conditions and workers’ rights.

The government also urged citizens to use the occasion to reflect on the importance of unity, productivity, and commitment to national development, while encouraging peaceful celebrations across the country.

The declaration means that government offices, banks, and many private businesses are expected to close for the day, in line with Nigeria’s statutory public holiday calendar.

The holiday underscores the government’s recognition of the workforce as a key driver of national growth and development.
