The Federal Government has made participation in Nigeria’s national tertiary education ranking exercise compulsory for universities, polytechnics and colleges of education across the country.
The Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa, announced the expansion of the ranking framework as part of efforts to improve transparency, accountability and the quality of Nigeria’s tertiary education system.
The 2026/2027 ranking exercise for universities is expected to commence in September, while the relevant advisory committee will determine the framework and methodology for the exercise.
The government says expanding the exercise beyond universities to include polytechnics and colleges of education will provide a broader picture of the performance of Nigeria’s tertiary institutions.
The policy is also being presented as part of the Federal Government’s wider education reforms under the Renewed Hope Agenda, with institutions expected to participate rather than opt out of the assessment.
The move could make national institutional rankings a more significant factor for students, parents, policymakers and education stakeholders when assessing the performance and competitiveness of tertiary institutions.
