Former Delta State Governor Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan has died at the age of 71, with his family announcing his passing on Monday, October 19, 2026.

Uduaghan, who governed Delta State from 2007 to 2015, died on the morning of October 19, according to a statement signed by his son, Toju Anire Uduaghan, on behalf of the family. He was three days short of his 72nd birthday.

The family expressed profound sorrow over his death, describing him as a beloved father, brother, uncle and patriarch whose life and public service touched many people across Delta State and Nigeria.

His death marks the end of a political career that spanned several years in public administration, including service as commissioner for health and secretary to the Delta State Government before his election as governor.

From Public Administration to Governorship

Before becoming governor in 2007, Uduaghan served as Delta State Commissioner for Health from 1999 to 2003 and later as Secretary to the State Government from 2003 to 2007.

He subsequently emerged as governor and remained in office for two terms, leaving office in 2015.

During his tenure, his administration pursued programmes relating to infrastructure, healthcare and development across the oil-producing state. His years in office also formed part of a politically significant period in Delta State, where questions of resource management, public services and development remained central to governance debates.

The family highlighted his contributions to the state’s development and the relationships he maintained with people across different communities.
