Former President Goodluck Jonathan on Sunday met with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, with details of their discussions remaining private.
Jonathan’s visit to the Aso Rock Villa was reportedly held behind closed doors, according to reports on the meeting.
The former president’s engagement with Tinubu comes as political activities continue to intensify ahead of the 2027 general election.
Jonathan, who served as Nigeria’s president from 2010 to 2015, has remained active in regional and international affairs since leaving office and has occasionally held engagements with serving Nigerian leaders.
The latest meeting is also not the first time Jonathan and Tinubu have met at the Presidential Villa. The two leaders have previously held private discussions, including a meeting reported in April 2026.
However, details of Sunday’s meeting, including the issues discussed by the two former political rivals, were not immediately made public.
Neither the Presidency nor Jonathan’s team had publicly disclosed the agenda of the latest engagement at the time of reporting.
The meeting is nevertheless likely to attract political attention given Jonathan’s stature as a former president and the increasing focus on political alignments ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Jonathan was defeated by Muhammadu Buhari in the 2015 presidential election after serving one full term as president. Since leaving office, he has largely maintained a role in diplomacy, mediation and regional peace-building.
Tinubu, meanwhile, is expected to seek a second term in office in 2027, with political parties and aspirants already beginning to consolidate their structures ahead of the election.
For now, the substance of the closed-door discussion between Tinubu and Jonathan remains undisclosed.
