Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu has urged Nigerian youths to reject political violence and refuse to allow themselves to be used as instruments of destruction during the 2027 election cycle.

Disu’s warning came as the Nigeria Police Force intensified its engagement with young Nigerians ahead of the general elections.

The IGP made the call during the National Youth Leadership and Security Dialogue in Abuja, held as part of activities marking International Youth Day 2026.

Police launch youth-focused campaign

The police initiative was organised under the National Youth Leadership and Security Initiative and focused on youth leadership, peacebuilding, security and responsible citizenship.

The programme carried the message “My Future is Greater Than Political and Digital Thuggery”, reflecting the police concern over both physical political violence and the growing use of digital platforms for manipulation and harmful political activity.

Disu warned young Nigerians against allowing politicians or other interests to manipulate them into violent activities.

He stressed that political ambitions should not come at the expense of the lives and futures of young people.

Youths urged to reject manipulation

The IGP’s message comes ahead of the 2027 elections, when political campaigns are expected to intensify nationwide.

The police have increasingly highlighted the potential role of young people in either promoting peaceful elections or becoming involved in electoral violence.

The force’s youth engagement programme included dialogue sessions, a walkathon and other activities designed to strengthen cooperation between young people and security agencies.

Police authorities have also warned against digital thuggery, misinformation and other forms of online manipulation that could heighten political tensions.

Disu’s intervention comes against a backdrop of broader security concerns ahead of the election.

The IGP has separately called for stronger intelligence sharing, community involvement and coordinated security operations to tackle insecurity, particularly in the North-West.

With political activity already gathering momentum, the police are seeking greater cooperation from young Nigerians to ensure that political participation does not translate into violence.
