The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan, has said adequate funding will be critical to providing the security and logistics required for the successful conduct of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
Amupitan made the statement on Wednesday in Owerri, Imo State, while delivering a goodwill message at the sixth Conference and Retreat for Senior Police Officers.
The conference was organised around the theme, “Developing a Nigeria Police Roadmap for Effective Management of Security During Elections.”
The INEC chairman said sufficient financial resources were necessary for the deployment of electoral personnel, materials and other logistical requirements, as well as effective security arrangements for the elections.
He spoke as senior police officers and other stakeholders considered security requirements for the 2027 electoral cycle.
A recent report by The Guardian similarly quoted Amupitan as warning that funding constraints could undermine election logistics and security if adequate resources were not provided.
Election security requires coordination between INEC, the police and other security agencies, particularly in a country where electoral activities take place across thousands of polling locations.
Adequate funding also affects the procurement and deployment of election materials, personnel movement, communication and other operational requirements.
Amupitan’s comments therefore place election financing among the logistical considerations that will need to be addressed ahead of the 2027 polls.
The INEC chairman attended the Owerri conference alongside National Commissioners Ken Nnamdi Ukeagu and Rear Admiral Jamila Abubakar Malaga (retd.), as well as the Resident Electoral Commissioner for Imo State, Chukwuemeka Ibeziakor.
The warning does not by itself establish a funding shortfall for the 2027 election. Rather, it highlights the commission’s assessment that adequate resources are necessary for election preparation and security.
