The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos State has criticised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s 66th Independence Day address, arguing that Nigerians need tangible improvements in their living conditions rather than further assurances of future economic prosperity.

The party said the President’s address highlighted economic reforms and improvements in selected macroeconomic indicators but did not adequately address the immediate pressures facing millions of households.

Its concerns included rising living costs, insecurity, unemployment and declining household purchasing power.

PDP Questions When Nigerians Will Feel the Benefits

The party’s spokesman, Prince Christopher Odianarewo, said the central question following the President’s address was when Nigerians would begin to experience the benefits of the administration’s economic policies in their homes and communities.

According to the party, economic progress should be assessed not only through headline indicators but also through changes in household incomes, employment opportunities and the affordability of essential goods and services.

The PDP’s position contrasts with the administration’s argument that its reforms are intended to correct structural economic problems and establish the foundation for sustainable growth.

In his Independence Day address, Tinubu acknowledged that economic hardship remained a reality for many Nigerians but maintained that the country was moving from reform towards broader prosperity.

Debate Over Economic Reform

The exchange reflects a wider political and economic debate about how the government’s performance should be measured.

Supporters of the reforms point to their intended long-term benefits, including improved economic stability and productive investment. Critics, meanwhile, emphasise the immediate financial pressures facing households and the need for faster, more visible relief.

The central question is how effectively economic policies can translate into improved living standards, stronger purchasing power and more accessible public services.

The Lagos PDP has called for outcomes that Nigerians can experience directly, rather than assurances that benefits will emerge in the future.
