Unions representing academic and non-academic workers at Lagos State-owned universities have commenced an indefinite strike following a dispute with the state government over the implementation of agreements on salaries, allowances and staff welfare.

The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the unions announced the industrial action after a final seven-day ultimatum to the Lagos State Government expired on Friday, October 2, without the resolution the unions had sought.

The action involves four unions: the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU), and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAT).

Unions cite unimplemented agreements

The unions said the strike followed unsuccessful engagements with the state government over outstanding commitments affecting university employees.

Their demands include the implementation of agreements concerning salary increases, allowances and other welfare provisions. The unions have argued that repeated discussions have not produced the necessary action.

JAC chairman Professor Ibrahim Bakare said the unions had exhausted available efforts to avert industrial action before deciding to proceed with the strike.

The dispute reflects broader tensions over the implementation of agreements between university workers and government authorities, including questions about funding, staff welfare and the conditions required to sustain academic activities.

Four state-owned institutions affected

The industrial action affects the following institutions:

  • Lagos State University (LASU)
  • Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM)
  • Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH)
  • Lagos State University of Education (LASUED)

The scope of the disruption will depend on how the strike is implemented at each institution and whether any subsequent negotiations lead to a suspension of the action.

Potential impact on students and staff

An indefinite university strike can disrupt lectures, examinations, administrative services and other activities, depending on which categories of employees withdraw their services.

Students may face uncertainty over academic calendars, while staff members and university management may be affected by the suspension of normal operations.

The duration of the disruption will depend on progress in negotiations between the unions and the state government.

Resolution depends on negotiations

The immediate challenge is to establish a basis for negotiations that addresses the unions’ demands while clarifying the government’s position on the disputed agreements.

The unions’ announcement establishes their decision to begin industrial action. The eventual resolution will depend on the substance of any settlement and whether the parties agree that outstanding commitments have been addressed.

Further updates from the state government and the unions will be important in determining the status of negotiations and when normal university activities may resume.
